I m really glad to say that Philippine children s lit is thriving and Supremo is a testament to this The story is about a grade schooler s journey in running for the highest position in his school s student council I couldn t help but be reminded of my own experiences in running for the student council Moreover the book pays tribute to one of the country s rather underestimated heroes Andres Bonifacio Currently Bonifacio is gaining attention and I d like to think that Zu s Supremo is helping in realizing proper recognition of BonifacioThe book is great for children because it teaches the values of confidence courage and friendship The story is nary a problem of course the protagonist Andro has a very powerful opponent is running independently though he has his bespren Miyo as his campaign manager and isn t a popular as the other kids to begin with Plus Andro is not as healthy as the other children he has a weak heart Though weak his heart is big He is set on running for Supremo the student council s highest position in order to help others Miyo and Andro are uite endearing The book is also illustrated by Al Estrella and the illustrations are charmingThe last time I read books for children was around two years ago when I took a class on children s lit Supremo is the first children s book I ve read in a while and I m really satisfied with it

“Supremo Andro”That is what Andro wants to hear when he becomes a sixth grader Which is why he decided to run as Supremo of the KatipunanHe did not realize how many things he had to do before he can become Supremo. Suprisingly fun My thematic read for today 113014 the 151st birthday of one of the Philippine National Heroes Andres Bonifacio Hurray to the Katipunan Mabuhay si Gat Andres BonifacioI thought this book is just another Xi Zug s spin of the hero s life just like his earlier work Ngumiti si Andoy 3 stars It is not This is about a boyhood friendship that between two fifth graders Leandro Andro Aponesto and his friend Eufemio Miyo Apilar Andro dreams to become the next president of the student body because he idolizes Andres Bonifacio and he wants to also be called Supremo However odds are against him because the representative of 5th grade his classmate Jenny has the experience better scholastic records and established popularity in all the levels of that grade schoolThe friendship between the boys can tug into your heart They uarrel they fight but the next day they say sorry and call each other besfren The school election the whole thing from filing of candidacy to the campaign to the actual voting and announcement of the winners mimics the Philippine or even other countries politics I agree with one of the reviews here on Goodreads this is a good springboard to discuss Philippine politics among grade schoolersThe sexual awakening having crush with your classmate The heartwarming father son relationship Andro s mom died when he was born so his father is supporting him all the way even during his candidacy his joining the school play and even his hospitalization due to his weak heartThere is so many this is about in this book Well structured Enough unexpected twist Two instances when I actually laughed while reading This is supposed to be for young adults but I tremendously enjoyed reading this uick uick readEven if Andres Bonifacio was relegated to the sideline and the story of Andro took the centerstage I still felt that I paid enough tribute to the heroism of Bonifacio today his 151th birthdayHappy Birthday to you Ka Andres

Really cute and funny The characters are irresistible With its exaggeratedly uirky situations that are still grounded in realism it's a sort of Origami Yoda in a Philippine setting I loved how it poked fun at Philippine politics This book would make a great springboard for discussing with kids the national elections I thought the ending was perfect and the design of the book incorporating comic strips as well as colored
